Day 12

We checked out two towns near San Cristóbal before lunch. San Juan Chamula is known for its church in which Catholism is mixed with Mayan traditions. As a result, the church floor is covered with pine needles and candles and chickens are being sacrified inside. Sadly it wasn't allowed to take photos inside.

Next, we visited Zinacantán, but the main attraction, the church, was closed due to reconstruction work after an earthquake.

We tried sopa azteca for lunch after arriving back in San Cristóbal. This turned out to be our first experience with Mexican food we didn't like as it was basically tasteless chicken broth with drowned tortilla chips. Afterwards, we just wandered around the city and came across some pretty interesting sights.

We decided to take it easy from mid afternoon onwards and relax a bit as it was unexpectedly hot.

Tomorrow, we will drive back to the busy Villahermosa for the night. On our way, we will visit the Sumidero Canyon.
